Pittston City is comprised of approximately 9,400 residents living in 2 square miles. Pittston was named for the elder William Pitt, a British statesman and defender of the Colonies. It was first settled in 1770. Pioneers along the Susquehanna River, mostly from Connecticut, built a line of fortresses known as Fort Pittston. By 1838, it had only 10 houses. Textiles, soft drinks and glass lenses are the main products produced here.
Of course, Pittston doesn't run itself, it takes teamwork and a lot of effort to keep Pittston functioning properly. A third class city government consists of a mayor and four council members with equal voting power. The city officials responsible for running Pittston are:
Mayor Joseph Keating
Councilman Kenny Bangs
Councilman Phil Campenni
Councilman Charles Infantino
Councilman Thomas McFadden
They are assisted by the following officials:
Controller Chris Latona
City Clerk Savino Bonita
Tax Collector John Gavigan
The future is indeed looking bright in the City of Pittston.
The "World Quality Tomato Capital" boasts the annual Pittston Tomato Festival in August. A New Clock Tower sits in the downtown and a brand new library is on Broad Street. Paying Tribute to the past, there is a Coal Miners Statue, Statue of Christopher Columbus and a Fireman's Memorial in various areas of the downtown. The Riverfront Park Project is on track and they are going to create a beautiful recreation area along the Susquehanna River. We will be adding more info about other projects as they become available.
